I Phone 4

iPhone 4, the world's thinnest smartphone at just 9.3 mm, is also one of the fattest in terms of features and functionality. The breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass - the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high speed trains. The glass is ultra-durable and more scratch resistant than ever. It's also recyclable.

With dimensions of 4.5 x 2.3 x 0.37 inches, the iPhone 4 is as tall as its predecessor the iPhone 3GS, but slightly thinner by 25 %. It comes with a 960-by-640 backlit LCD display that boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch and is equipped with the power-efficient mobile Apple A4 processor and 512 MB of RAM. With such an armoury, the iPhone 4 can easily perform complex jobs such as multi-tasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls.

iPhone 4 includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope and 5 megapixel built-in cameras on both back and front sides that are perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits. The camera on the back is equipped with a built-in LED flash. The dual camera system is one of the distinguishing features of the new iPhone when compared to the previous version. To support FaceTime calls, iPhone 4 also has two microphones.
Another distinguishing feature is the retina display on iPhone 4 that is the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen.

Based on iOS 4, iPhone 4 comes with a new way of multitasking. Users can switch between their favorite third-party apps instantly without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.

And the addition of home screen folders is another common feature of iPhone 4.

Another big change is the SIM card slot that is a Micro-SIM format, just like the iPad. According to Apple's Steve Jobs, the Micro-SIM format allows more space for the larger battery.

iPhone 4's display - called a Retina Display - features 940 x 640 pixels (326 pixels per square inch ) which is four times the resolution of previous iPhone models.

Samsaung Galaxy Tab

The Samsaung Galaxy Tab (GT-P1000) is an e-reader, Internet gadget and a portable rich-multimedia on the go.

The Galaxy Tab has a seven-inch multi-touch screen TFT-LCD display with 1024x600 pixel resolution. Since it is not an AMOLED screen like Samsung's flag-ship Galaxy S, the Galaxy Tab's screen may be difficult to read under direct sunlight.

During tests, the Galaxy Tab could be comfortably held in the left hand while the right hand did the typing on the 'qwerty' virtual keyboard on the screen or swiping the screen to browse through various functions.

It runs on Google Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) and is powered by Cortex A8 1.0 GHz Application Processor with PowerVR SGX540 for graphics. The gadget has 512 MB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage space, expandable to 32 GB. There is no USB port, but the Galaxy Tab can be linked to a PC with a 30-pin connector. Once connected, it can function as an external or portable drive, into which you can drag and drop photos, videos and audio clips without having to use a proprietary interface application.

The audio quality of a phone conversation was good. To use it as a phone you need to use the provided stereo headset or you can link it to a Bluetooth headset or use the speaker function.

The gadget also has a 1.3-megapixel camera at the front for making video calls on a 3G network. EDGE is fine for most online tasks, but when you need to download large applications or large multimedia files, but when you need to download large applications or large multimedia files, it's best to connect to a WiFi hotspot.

During tests, the touch screen responded well. It registers a little vibration at every touch to tell you that your command has been obeyed. The Cortex A8 1.0 G processor also performs well. Games like Ninja touch and other mulitimedia applications played without hiccups.

The Galaxy Tab played XviD high-definition video beautifully without  skipping. The player is capable of 1080p video, but the seven-inch screen isn't the best for full resolution. You can convert a full-length video at the 1024 x 600 resolution to enjoy watching on the go.

The Galaxy Tab has three e-reader applications. One lets you download and read classic literature from a public-domain site. The pages can be flipped like those of a book and the font size is adjustable. The Galaxy Tab also comes with a Kindle application for  Android, so you can buy e-books from Amazon to enjoy reading on the Tab. There is also a Readers Hub application from Kobo, so you can purchase e-books and e-magazines in Kobo format. The PressDisplay application allows you to download a full edition newspaper to read on the gadget.

The Galaxy Tab also has a still camera whose quality is good enough for a mobile phone - for taking shots to share with friends on Facebook, for example. The camera can also record video at 720 x 480 pixels at 30 fps with good enough quality for YouTube or watching on the Tab itself. Typing only grips was that the Android virtual keyboard is easy and Samsung made it easier with the Swype function, which allows you to drag your finger on the letters you want to use to form words.
